Message Board : Summer Reading Program
MessagesI am hoping that someone can recommend an artist to come in and do a cartooning workshop for my teens. Ideally, it would have a manga tilt but that isn’t a deal breaker. Does anyone know of a fabulous artist out there? Thanks!
Elizabeth Erwin For our Wee Reads Program, we have always given a board book as the final prize for participation. We had been lucky up until this year finding something wonderful that we could afford. This year all the prices were way too high to consider. Until....I stumbled across Literacy Partners. Go to the following site: http://teacher.scholastic.com/products/literacypartnerships/index.asp You will be able to register with them and purchase books that are to be given away free, for deeply reduced prices. It is wonderful!
Ann Woodrow I just wanted to let you know that Insectropolis is an insect learning center located in Toms River, NJ. We have thousands of pinned specimens from around the world, hundred of live bugs, interactive exhibits, and a few bugs that are able to be touched. We have been open to the public for 2 1/2 years and host lots of school field trips, camps, scouts, and birthday parties. We also offer an outreach program called "Bugs on the Go" where we travel and bring a variety of bugs (pinned specimens as well as live bugs- some touchable) and discuss similarities & differences, unique characteristics, and defense tactics in a fun and educational manner. We can adapt our program for audiences of any age. Sincerely, Diane Redzinak Manager Insectropolis www.insectropolis.com (732) 349-7090
Allison Santos A flyer will soon be available on this website for McDonald's Coupons for counties in the southern portion of our state. Libraries can fill out the flyer and return it to Peggy King at Burlington County Library.
Allison Santos I don't know if this qualifies as "cool," but I handed out the bookmarks and let each teen take a "candy grab"--3 pieces of fun-sized candy. The candy grap supplemented each prize as well. They really liked it.
Ellen Smith Is it possible to get "Free happy meals" for Cumberland County?
Maryjane Shipman Does anyone have a suggestion for cool, but cheap items I can give the teens when they sign up? I am hoping to jazz it up a little.
Kimberly Giarratano Okay, you can tell I REALLY like butterflies. Stumbled on this gorgeous download on the Esty online store for $3.75 http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=11084795 "2 page set of digital 8 1/2 by 11 inch sheets full of beautiful butterflies for your artwork. Perfect for altered art, collage, etc. This listing is for a digital collage sheet emailed as a downloadable digital jpg file. Save the file to your computer & then print it as often as you like. It is 300 DPI for excellent printing. Make your own transparencies, tags, emphemera, etc." Not that I have a clue how to do this, but the pix are great! Sue Grotyohann Monroe Township Library
Sue Grotyohann Hi Everyone! Has anyone used "Mark the Magician," Mark Zacharia? If so, thoughts? Thanks so much! :) Martha
Martha Current Teens & tweens might enjoy this very obscure fact -- in Herbie Brennan's Faerie Wars books, the characters in the faerie universe have names of different kinds of butterflies. Details on his website - http://www.faeriewars.com/light.htm. Go to "Characters." They're all English butterflies, but we have our own blues, skippers, hairstreaks and emperors here! Brennan also has downloadable origami butterflies - patterns and instructions - on the same page under Origami butterflies. Sue Grotyohann Monroe Township Library
Sue Grotyohann Hi I created a craft that shows a caterpillar morphing into a butterfly. Here are the instructions: Materials: popsicle sticks, glue, paint or markers, pipecleaners, tissue paper. 1. Fold a tissue paper into a fan by taking a quarter inch of the paper folding it, then taking the next piece folding it back a quarter inch. keep going until you have a fan. (Beginning at the short side, fold over and under, making 3/4 inch wide strips, down length of the paper) you will end up with one long strip. 2. Fold a second piece of tissue paper and do the same to this piece. 3. Glue both strips side to side on the back of a popsicle stick. 4. cut two quarter inch pieces of pipe cleaners, these will be your antennas. Glue them on top of the popsicle sticks. 5. glue cotton balls descending onto the popsicle stick. 6. Use markers, glitter, or paint to color the cotton balls. 7. Use goggly eyes to have eyes or use paint. 8. unfold the fold fans out to demonstrate the metamorophis.. decorate the wings with glitter, markers, or paint you got a butterfly!

Jennifer Has anyone used Sweeter Than Honey, a sibling band out of Floram Park? If so, thoughts? Thanks so much!
Martha S. M. Current Hi Everyone, I just received an email from a gentleman who offers a moth/metamorphosis program incase anyone wanted something scientific for a program. We have not had this presenter at our library so I can't comment further on the program. I’ve read about your summer children’s program; “Catch the Reading Bug”. I think that the items I offer can expand your program in an visually stimulating and inexpensive way. Cocoons for Kids focuses on teaching children and young adults about the cecropia moth life cycle including metamorphosis. The cecropia moth is the largest flying insect in North America, although few people are aware of its existence. If you are interested, please check out my website at : www.Cocoonsforkids.com I’m already working with my local library and other organizations to share this experience with the general public. Feel free to email me with any questions. My address is Artgood@cocoonsforkids.com Thank you and good luck with your program. Sincerely, Art Good
Allison Santos If you are interested in the survival tins, you can find some information here: http://www.fieldandstream.com/fieldstream/photogallery/0,13355,1225788,00.html http://www.equipped.org/psp/psp_contents.htm http://www.equipped.org/psp/index.htm http://www.equipped.org/lifepackit.htm
Laura Does anyone know of an artist who does graphic novel style drawing programs for teens?
Lina Crowell As requested at today's workshop, here is the website where one can order the free literacy brochures. Many of them are also available in Spanish. http://www.edpubs.ed.gov
Michelle Willis This is an update for everyone that attended the craft workshops or who are planning to attend an upcoming information workshop and are interested in obtaining the instructions from the craft workshop. The instructions will be available after the last information workshop, around mid month on the website. Stay tunned!
Allison Has anyone hired a steel drum band or similar group? I would appreciate any contact information or ideas! Thanks so much for your help!
Martha S. M. Current Accidental craft idea! While at the YA workshop, I inadvertantly used a perfume sample from a magazine as the picture on the CD craft. My bag smelled wonderful when I returned to work! Try it as a closet or drawer freshener.
Justine Tomczak Hi All! Jim Vagias has a workshop for YA's called: Metamorphosis! A young adult Hands-on Magic Workshop! If anyone is interested, his contact number is: 732-238-8139 Thanks!
Bernadette Titterington For the folks at the YA section meeting...the gocco screen printing set I mentioned can be found at Wet Paint Art Store Good luck this summer!
Jessica Trujillo Has anyone spoken to Terry Parrett this year about performing? If so, do you know if he has a program for teens that would work with this year's theme?
Sandi Cronce Excellent hints on raising caterpillars at this site! http://www.neostream.net/~bfarm/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=18&Itemid=58
Susan Grotyohann Hi Laurie! I had the Lizard Guys here last summer and they were great with the kids. They are known to show up fairly close to show time, so that was a bit nerve-wracking for me! But they were very well-received: I recommend them! Ellen Smith
Ellen Smith Hi All, Has anyone use Mark H. Wurst aka the Library Magician?? How would you rate his performance? Thanks in advance for any information you might have. Karen
Karen Bartole Has anyone have The Lizard Guys at their library? How were they? I thought it would be a different program for our summer reading finale. Thanks
Laurie Leon Is it ok to add a recommendation here? I used Jim Vagias last summer and will use him again this year. As a former teacher, he really knows how to handle a large bunch of kids - had them at peak excitement, but could bring them back down to rapt attention. His program was geared to the theme and also the library. contact him at 732-238-8139
Trisha Fishelman I received a free butterfly bookmark from the company Fun-n-nuf (1-800-333-3266) or website www.fun-n-nuf.com. They have plastic clip-over-the-page bookmarks in the shape of a butterfly, bee, dragonfly, and ladybug. You can purchase them in bulk. The brochure says to call or e-mail for a catalog and free sample. Sharon Rawlins Youth Services Consultant NJ State Libary 185 West State St. P.O. Box 520 Trenton, NJ 08625-0520
Sharon Rawlins Check out this cool butterfly wall sculpture! http://www.whatonearthcatalog.com/whatonearth/Outlet-Store_200/View-All-Outlet-Store-Items_8BA/Item_Butterfly-Spiral-Wall-Art_HD4302_ps_cti-8BA.html
Sue Grotyohann We used Allan Lieberman last year. He worked well for us under very adverse conditions! Just as he began a child hit the fire alarm and we all had to get out of the building and wait for the fire department to go through the building! Since it was a nice day, I asked if he would play and sing to our pre-schoolers outside on our patio. He was very nice and did so even though he had to yell over the sound of our fountain, which could not be shut off, and fire trucks in the background!! It was quite a hectic morning but he was very flexible. The parents appreciated him, as did our 3 - 5 year old tots. Bonnie McDonald, Madison Public Library
Bonnie Mcdonald We are glad to see another library that is going to bring lady bugs and butterflies into the library. Good Luck :-)
Jennifer Boyce We plan to grow butterflies and have a lady bug farm in the Children's Department, so kids can watch the bugs hatch and grow. We ordered the kits from Discount School Supply - they are in the science section. They shipped in two days!
Lynnette Fucci One of our teen patrons has a little green VW Bug and we are going to decorate it as a "reading bug" and she's going to drive it in our annual Memorial Day Parade. Volunteers are walking behind decked out in our "bugcatcher" costumes giving out promotional materials to kids. The idea was in the binder provided by the CSLP.
Pat Sherman We have never used him, but I am sure if someone has they will be happy to comment on him.
Allison Is it okay to ask for opinions on performers? If so, I'd like feedback on Allan Lieberman. Thank you!
Ellen Smith For anyone who is interested in implementing a Wee Read program at their library, we will be addressing programming ideas and program logs for pre-readers at the Information Workshops. Hope to see you there! Michelle Willis 2008/2009 Co-chair
Michelle Willis I want to implement a "Wee Read" for my birth through 3 SRC participants, but I could use some specifics on what games/activites work well. Thanks!
Ellen Smith Welcome to the Summer Reading Club 2008 Message Board. If you haven't registered for a Craft or Information Workshop yet, there are still openings at each of the locations, but don't wait they are filling up quickly! If you have any great program ideas, want to discuss a performer or recommend a book please do so. Allison Santos 2008/2009 Co-chair
