We just finished our program with a performance from Marilyn Scanlon and her "Sail the Seven Seas this Summer" show. We would highly recommend her as she was delightfully engaging, energetic and delivered a most important message : that the library is the real treasure. |

There is still to book Magic Jim for this summer. Jim Vagias is wonderful. I cannot say enough about how impressed everyone at the Bernardsville Library is and has been with having Magic Jim perform. You will not be disappointed! |

TD Bank is pleased to share its 2010 TD Bank Summer Reading Program with the local community. The Summer Reading Program is designed to encourage students to continue reading during the summer months. Children who read ten books by the end of the summer will receive $10 from TD Bank to deposit into a new or existing TD Bank Young Saver Account.* The Summer Reading Program takes place May 3rd September 30th. More information is available at www.tdbank.com/summerreading.
The Program kicks off in May with TD Banks Employee Reading Month, where senior banking representatives visit local schools, libraries and organizations to read to a first through third grade class for about 30 minutes.
This years chosen book, A Chair for My Mother, tells the affecting story of a child who discovers that sometimes the best gifts come from the heart. Along with its inspirational message of hope, the book also was chosen for its educational value, and its focus on saving money for future rewards. TD Bank will donate this book to your classroom/organization so that other children can enjoy this wonderful story.
If you are interested in receiving Summer Reading bookmarks (available in English or Spanish) or if you are interested in having a TD Bank representative visit your library during Employee Reading Month, please contact Jennifer Goudy, Community Relations Manager, at (856) 470-3761 or jennifer.goudy@yesbank.com. All of us at TD Bank look forward to working with you to make the Summer Reading Program a success.

I had a few questions about the fonts used on for the Make a Splash manual.Countryhouse was used for the headers and Bubblegum was used for the chapter numbers. New Baskerville was used for the body. For the Make Waves manual, Scratch was used for the headers and New Baskerville was used for the body.
Hope this helps!!
I found all of these FREE on various sites this afternoon.
Bubblegum http://www.searchfreefonts.com/free/bubblegum.htm
Countryhouse http://www.lettersnstuff.com/fonts/fonts.htm
Grinched http://www.getfreefonts.info/free_font.grinched.html (this font is awkward to use, as letters tend to mash together, and I tried a few different free downloads and it was the same each time)

Hi Everyone,
Public libraries are starting to receive their summer reading incentives from Upstart. I ordered a childrens banner, a childrens poster, a teen poster (if your library wanted it),
1 package of teen bookmarks and 2 packages of childrens bookmarks for each library.
Many libraries have contacted me to say that instead of receiving 2 packages of childrens bookmarks, their invoice says they are backordered to get 2 packages of flip flop necklaces.
I am aware of this problem and have made Upstart aware of it as well. We are working to resolve it.
Please dont contact me or Upstart about this issue. I will work with them to correct it and let you know the outcome.
Best,

FYI,
Mark Twain Impersonator Offers Collaborative Summer Library Programs
Themed programs for audiences age 8 80 designed for Summer Reading Programs and Programs for General Audiences through the end of 2011.
Water and Travel are constant themes in Mark Twains work. He traveled more extensively and was associated with more bodies of water than any other land-based American writer of the nineteenth century. He worked on water; wrote about water. His travels on it helped make him the most famous writer on Earth.
Every work on the following list was made possible because of Twains association with water.
Mississippi River
Life On The Mississippi
Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
The Guilded Age
Atlantic Ocean
Innocents Abroad
Tramps Abroad
Pacific Ocean
Dispatches from the Sandwich Islands
Philippine-American War
Mediterranean Sea
Innocents Abroad
Nile River
Innocents Abroad
Water - everywhere
Three Thousand Years Among the Microbes
GENERAL AUDIENCES
Mark Twains Last Stand (Biography and Fantasy)
Twain had been filled with wanderlust from his earliest boyhood. Respiratory ailments kept him housebound until age four, enhancing his dream to travel anywhere, and any mode of transportation would do, including time travel. Last Stand uses this mode of transportation to bring Twain into the present century to comment on the human
condition, and offer a permanent solution to Recession. But he has an agenda: he wants to run for President in 2012.
Running Time: Eighty minutes of stories, anecdotes and tall tales to entertain, inform and inspire.
YOUNG AUDIENCES
Mark Twain Live
This show is what the children make it. We offer stories from the oral tradition that made it possible for Twain to become the beloved performing artist and author; and add stories that reflect Twains gift of improvisation. This show was inspired by a Clemens family tradition. After dinner each night, he would tell his children impromptu stories about objects in the room. They would make suggestions at will that made the stories more to their liking. For this series of shows, the children get to ask Twain any question they like, provided it has something to do with water. In 2010, his response has to include a reference to water from his writings or his life. In 2011, the questions can cover any topic, but his references must be travel.
Running Time: 45 minutes to one hour each.
COST
Single program $650 each up to two. plus travel and expenses
Three programs $1,500 over two days, plus travel and expenses.
- Additional programs - $550.
(Travel between each program not to exceed 15 miles. A minimum allowance of two hours between each show is required for travel, meals and costume adjustments.)
ABOUT ALAN KITTY
Kitty has been a Mark Twain Impersonator and has portrayed the humorist on stage and film since 1979. As a playwright, he has penned seven works, including three one-man shows on Twain; and a musical play about Bing Crosby. He was the recipient of a Manhattan Cable grant for his original series Reel Exposure. Other works include the dark political comedy Elective Behaviors, and the whimsical social satire Landscape. His current show, Mark Twains Last Stand has had over 90 performances, and opens Off Broadway on May 6, 2010 at the Kraine Theatre in New York.

Zucchini Boats Teen Craft
Turn a zucchini into a Viking Ship Centerpiece that holds a sea of dip!
Supplies: Zucchini (one for each boat, and extras for parts), Nori, Radishes (sliced in advance)
Toothpicks, Bamboo Skewers, Spoons and/or Scoops, Scissors; Peeler & Knife for adult
This works best in mid-late July when zukes are at their peak, and sometimes free. Also works with cucumbers on a smaller scale.
1. Position zucchini so it looks most like a long boat. If needed, take a strip off bottom to stabilize.
2. Slice top third of the zucchini off lengthwise, and reserve.
3. Scoop seeds and some flesh out of boat, leaving a thick layer on the bottom and sides.
4. Peel reserved top third, and cut into long wedges (like dill pickles).
5. Cut wedges in half, and trim with scissors into the head and tail of a Viking dragon boat. (a simple notch at the chin of the neck makes a head; a piece of a wedge makes a good tail.
6. Attach head and tail on bow and stern with toothpicks.
7. Attach radish slices to the sides with toothpicks to suggest decorative shields.
8. Trim Nori sheet as desired for sail, and thread onto bamboo skewer. Anchor with leftover chunks of zucchini if it tears or slips too much. Paper sails work much better, if full edibility is not a goal.
9. Put a chunk of zucchini in the center of the boat. and anchor the skewer through it into the hull.
10. Fill hull with dip, and place completed boat on serving tray surrounded by cut veggies. Enjoy!
If using for a party centerpiece rather than a craft, try to get a giant overgrown zuke from a home gardener. Impressive!

I am the Marketing Associate with Uno Chicago Grill of Deptford, NJ. Recently I contacted several of the local libraries about their summer reading programs and children's events. A few were very interested in our Make Your Own Pizza parties for kids, where the children get to make their own pizza, tour the restaurant including the kitchen, receive an activity book and apron, as well as a certificate for a free children's meal during their next visit. We are incorporating a storytime into the traditional pizza party for these events. The library will be signing up the children for the event and we will host the party during which a representative from the library will host a storytime. Kids love the parties and it's a unique way to get them interested in reading! Just a suggestion for other libraries. We are located in Deptford, NJ.
